There are certain tricks that you learn over the years if you frequent things like flea markets that have the same vendors time and time again. But in my opinion, the most important thing is to get to know the vendors and more importantly that they get to know you. That way if they see something that they know you'll like, they'll be sure to hold onto it or at least let you know in advance about it. I've had many do that for me because I've taken the time to get to know them.

The other week when I was emailing some vendors that I know about finding a coffee table, I ran across aclear coverage map online and saw that my area was on it. I showed it to my roommates and after that we decided to change over our internet to the service.

I had one really great flea market vendor email me about one that was just my style, along with some great pictures of it. Some of the furniture that I've found at flea markets is better made than a lot that you'll find in nicer furniture stores today!

Since when I started my learning process to become able to use SEO and other web marketing techniques efficiently, I have been considering the integration of several methods that may help a potential webmaster (in this experiment, me) earn a substantial revenue from his/her online activities.

Only honest reviews tough! I don't believe in spamming. I think spam is nowadays' plague, and not just on the Web; just look at our TV channels, the non-paid ones: how much untrue and annoying ad spots do we see each and every day?

There must be a measure, a timing, and a certain neutrality when we introduce something new to the public. It's important to highlight the idea, the purpose and the advantages, but they are NOT to be exaggerated, nor we should push people to try it out dishonestly. The choice of what to buy and read and what not is always up to people, it's part of their freedom as human beings, and the best thing we can do when presenting a service/product is a gentle and honest introduction that would help them get to know what we sponsor better, but without feeling pressured. If they choose to try it out, and remain satisfied, then we've won. If they criticize it, we should do a step back and try to fix everything before we present the product/service again.

This concept applies to blog advertising as well. People buy blog links because they want a webpage to be known by as many people as possible, but keep in mind that no one shall visit a website willingly if they "smell" ugly advertisement odour. Hosting here. Hosting there. There are so many hosting providers on the web nowadays - and that includes resellers - that choosing has become an almost impossible mission. Hosting websites come up like mushrooms every week, but what really counts when we get to choose the one who will be running our website is a few - but fundamental - things:

- bandwidth
- uptime

These three things make it up for everything. In fact, we can get email addresses for free too, and usually databases, subdomains and addons come with EVERY plan, by any provider. But these 3 things can make the substantial difference.

Now, there are several ways to increase traffic, but for brevity sake, I'll only list the 7 most important ones, which I hope will help you get started with your business or blog.

1) Get advertised on websites and search engines. The first option is available to blogs, the second one is most recommended for online businesses. For instance, you could opt for Yahoo ads, or try out Google Adwords; if you have a blog, you can get free and paid advertising on other blogs and relevant websites; that way, visitors of the advertising site will more likely click on your link and visit your site / blog, and use your services in most cases. Relevance is the key: if your site / blog is about fashion clothes, make sure to advertise on fashion blogs and websites, and/or in the fashion related keywords on search engines.

2) Write and submit articles on article directories. Not just people who like your articles will willingly visit your website, but even when your articles get republished your link will be available for visitors of that site to reach yours. Definitely, article writing is a sure way to get quality visitors.

Computer troubles

Looks like I have been a sort of lazy blogger again. Never mind. :) I still have something to share you readers, so let's get started.
I'm sure all of you Windows OS users at some point have experienced problems with your laptop or desktop computer: error messages popping up from nowhere, programs not working, software not installing and your computer that freezes while you're working... :( And these ones are just examples! To say the truth, all of this crap happened to me too a few months ago, and I had to fix the whole Windows registry to make my computer work again. Quite a hassle, isn't it? My computer registry classes were severely corrupted, and the keys and settings messed up. I used Regwork to fix it all, and looks like it worked. That is a free registry cleaner that scans a computer to find problems and fixes them automatically; it's a xp registry cleaner, but I think it works with Vista as well. Really, when the BIG troubles come up and we risk having to format the whole computer, better clean registry and get rid of the hassle. It's not fun. :(

Again about Backlinks (and how to boost them)

I know I have posted about backlinks and techniques to gain more of them already, but since SEO is a subject that we keep learning day by day, no stop, it's good to add more to it and share it with my readership in the process.

So, there is basically a list of to-do that you should keep in mind as you work on your blog / site to make it more SEO friendly and backlink-attractive:

1- Make friends online! Link exchange with similar blog, with nice people who own a blog, with sites you're interested in. If you're loved, you'll be put on homepage, thus getting some good link juice as well.

2- Your blog is about cars? Do comment on automotive sites / blogs! Those are ALL relevant links to search engines' eyes ;) And read the following point too, now...

3- DO comment on Nofollow blogs! Who cares if you get a Nofollow backlink? It's STILL a backlink, dude! And it will boost up your Yahoo backlink rank pretty nicely.

4- Keep your content up to date! People will comment on your entries, and hopefully link back to you, and by any chance, RETURN their comments so that you leave a web trace on their blogs too. It works!

5- Have fun! Getting backlinks manually can be tiring and time-consuming, but if you live it as a hobby, and setup - say - 1 hour a day to dedicate specifically to it, you'll start to enjoy it and relax in the process. :)

It's amazing how quickly Christmas holidays are approaching. :) And Thanksgiving and Black Friday too. With my family we're organizing things already, decorations, presents, food... and we're taking a look at Savings.com to get some inspiration. One of my newly adopted siblings recently asked me where she could register a free blog with no annoying ads like Blogspot.com and which would allow dofollow links in entries (Blogdrive.com converts all links to nofollow now!).

Vox blogs are also easy to get backlinks on, since the Vox network is really huge, and if you spot an interesting high PR blog, you simply need to be a top commentator to keep its homepage juice linking to you.

Vox is also a nice community where you can join groups and post in forums. If your really need a place to get started with blogging, SEO and link building, I really suggest registering to Vox. :) It makes it all easier.

I realize I've been talking truly A LOT about ways and tricks to get backlinks, but we should never forget that backlinks only have secondary importance when it comes to SERP: in fact, content is king, and a site or blog with only little content will never make it to first positions. Take Wikipedia as an example: it's always on top rankings, even when new pages are added, and thus with only little backlinks. In a few words: it's CONTENT that makes up for the REPUTATION of a website.

Pagerank updates

There has been a lot of rumor over the last Pagerank updates. One thing that I noticed is that people found it surprising that their blogs / sites suddenly got a PR1 or PR2 even though they haven't been working on their sites a lot.

Honestly, I found that funny. Why? Well dear people, the truth is that you don't really NEED to always update and work on backlinks to get a natural Pagerank. Pagerank can build up on its own if people love your contents and link back to you. It's that simple, guys.

So, did you get a Pagerank improvement? Enjoy it and stop wondering. :D You've been doing just a good job.

Nofollow or dofollow? That's the dilemma.

Not just quoting Shakespeare, but putting something real into words. People are often torn between choosing dofollow or nofollow links into their blogs, both in the comment section and in their entries?

Where's the compromise then?

USE DOFOLLOW FOR:
1) your site internal pages (inner Pagerank is important!)
2) your family blogs and best friends (use the rel=friend too)
3) your blogroll
4) your commentators (it'll get you more commentators!)
4) your other sites / blogs

USE NOFOLLOW FOR:
1) paid links
2) non-important links
4) bad neighborood links

Uni.cc websites

I have come to realize that sometimes it can get really hard for a uni.cc site to gain some ranking of its own. :( I notice that, contrarily to subdomains and blogspot sites, uni.cc sites or blogs tend to gain less ranking and backlinks than other free services.

I wonder why?

One explaination I gave to myself is that free sites are often full of spam or used for bad sites, thus search engines are more careful to assign high rankings to these URLs.

Now, it might be that I haven't worked on my site a lot (I haven't worked on it for MONTHS I should say!) but I've seen subdomains on which bloggers haven't worked AT ALL getting a PR0! Why my bar is still gray? Mmmh... This is a mystery I'm determined to find out about.

Mind your links! No more than 100 per page

It might sound foolish, but 100 links per page may start ruining your page reputation. The reason? More than a webpage, it would look more like a link farm, which is expressely fought by all search engines, especially by Google.

What to do then? Simply split your links on more pages. If your linked sites were looking for some link juice, just make sure to create high PR backlinks to your link pages by commenting on high PR dofollow blogs. It's not hard. :)

Yahoo backlinks

As you may know already, Google backlinks are counted for dofollow links only; while all webpages are indexed of course, dofollow links are really the only ones that count in Google. On the contrary, Yahoo backlinks are counted on ALL types of links, both dofollow and nofollow.

How to increase your Yahoo backlink count?

1) Comment on blog entries. Either it be blogs in your Blogroll or other blogs, comment on as many posts as you can everyday, and leave your link in the Website field; each comment will thus count as a backlink.

2) Be part of others' Blogrolls. It helps increase your link exposure.

3) Put your link on forum signatures and on Yahoo Ask.

4) Include your link in sites/blogs directories, setup link campaigns and blog contests.

All of these will rapidly boost your backlinks.

Technorati rankings

As you all know, the blogosphere has its own rankings in Technorati, one of the biggest blog directories on the web. Technorati ranks work somewhat like Alexa ranks, as the lower your rank, the better.

Technorati rankings and Authority are based on how many backlinks you get on the last 6 months, and the more backlinks you get, the better you rank. Also, keeping your site update helps maintaining your rank at optimal levels.

If you own a blog, submit it to Technorati as soon as possible, and start working on your rank! :) Good luck.

The value of Alexa ranking

Alexa is one of those ranking tools I mentioned in my last entry. Alexa ranking tool measures the popularity of a domain, as in how many unique visits a website gets every 24 hours, and the Alexa rank is updated every 2-4 days.

The lower the Alexa rank number, the better you rank!

However, keep in mind that Alexa rankings are based on Alexa toolbar uses; non-toolbar users visits count relatively; it's the Alexa users to boost most of your ranking.

Anyway, Alexa rankings are still king when it comes to counting web popularity, so make sure your site is always active, and try to attire new visitors every day. That will grant you a better popularity rank over the months. :)

Pagerank: Why is it important?

Pagerank is a score given to each webpage on the WWW by Google. This score has several applications in the e-marketing world, for the following reasons:

1) a website or webpage with high pagerank climbs it up to the first positions in Google's indexes when a common web user does a search engine search. That means that a company whose website has higher pagerank can get more visits and more chances to see its products sold;

2) some websites try to get high pagerank not just to rank better in search engines, but also to increase the website popularity and get affiliate returns to it.

Overall, webmasters nowadays really care about the whole Pagerank matter, but you should never underestimate the value of the other ranking tools, which are: Alexa, Technorati and Yahoo backlinks. I'll talk about them in my next entries.
